Bringing Cambodian Flavors to Seattle

Owning a restaurant has always been a dream of the business owner. Their family and the owner love dining out and living in the greater Seattle area gives them endless opportunities to explore foods from all over the world. But one thing always stood out—how hard it was to find Cambodian restaurants. Seattle is home to the third-largest Cambodian community in the United States, yet our cuisine isn’t well-represented in the restaurant scene. That’s what inspired the owner to take the leap. They wanted to share the rich and unique flavors of Cambodian food with the community and create a space where people could enjoy a taste of our culture. This dream isn’t just about food—it’s about connection and representation. And they are excited to bring it to life!

Overcoming the Struggles

When the owner started their restaurant, they didn’t have much capital, so they searched for a bargain and ended up buying a failed restaurant at a low price. The owner rebranded it and introduced Cambodian cuisine, excited to bring something unique to the community. However, being a first-time restaurant owner came with its challenges. they have to learn how to use and maintain the kitchen equipment—something they are still figuring out. Managing food inventory was tough at first, and the owner wasted so much produce and meat before getting better at it. Hiring employees has been difficult with Seattle’s high minimum wage, and marketing Cambodian food has been an uphill battle. While most people who try our dishes love them, growth has been slow despite positive Yelp and Google reviews. Financially, the reserves they saved up ran out quickly, leaving them struggling month to month, and paying taxes while losing money has been incredibly stressful. It’s been two years, and the owner is still losing money, but they know the only way forward is to boost sales. The owner is working hard every day to overcome these challenges and make their dream a success.

A Turning Point with CACCWA

The owner reached out to CACCWA for assistance and attended several of their business workshops, where they gained valuable knowledge. With CACCWA’s help, the owner secured an SBRL loan through a State of Washington program, which allowed them to purchase a much-needed food cooler and provided working capital for their restaurant. CACCWA also supported the owner in filing a complaint with the city about construction issues that were hurting their business by limiting parking and customer access. On top of that, CACCWA brought in a professional digital marketing team to boost the business’s online presence. They organized the owner’s online directory, ran social media ad campaigns, and helped drive more traffic to their restaurant, both in person and through online orders. CACCWA’s support has truly made a difference in helping their business grow.
