Saigon Drip Cafe: A 37-Year Journey from Community Roots to Pioneer Square Success
Saigon Drip Cafe opened its doors in Pioneer Square on July 15, 2023—the start of an exciting new chapter, but a journey that had been 37 years in the making.
It all began in Springwood, a small Section 8 community in Kent, WA, where a tight-knit group of neighbors grew into lifelong friends. Growing up in low-income housing, they didn’t have much, but the support of their community ensured we had summer lunches and Christmas gifts. As children of refugees who had to rebuild their lives in a foreign land, their parents worked tirelessly to create opportunities for them.
With little more than each other, they found joy in the simple things; playing baseball late into the night, shooting hoops until the streetlights flickered off, and listening to Dave Niehaus call Mariners games on the radio. We gathered for Seahawks games and idolized Sonics legends like Shawn Kemp, Ray Allen, and Gary Payton. They traded cards, played pogs, and dreamed of a world beyond Springwood.
Fast forward 37 years, and those childhood friendships evolved into something bigger, a business. People often say they shouldn’t go into business with friends, but for them, it was an opportunity to combine their skills and build something meaningful—not just for themselves, but for their families and community.
In just six months, Saigon Drip Cafe has made a lasting impact on Pioneer Square, creating a space where people feel at home, just as we once did in their neighborhood. They’ve embraced their role in giving back, paying forward the kindness they received growing up.
Now, their banh mi sandwiches are sold at Lumen Field during Seahawks games, a surreal full-circle moment for kids who once dreamed in the shadows of that very stadium. Their catering business has expanded, serving local businesses and growing beyond what they ever imagined.
But the greatest reward? Seeing the smiles of their customers as they experience Saigon Drip, a dream that began long ago in a small community in Kent, WA and one that continues to grow every day.
